  • Live Oaks symbolize strength and vitality as their wood is incredibly tough and durable.

The name Live Oaks came from the fact that they remain green and "alive" throughout the winter when other oak trees are dormant and leafless. The naval vessel U.S.S. Constitution was nicknamed “Old Ironsides” after her live oak hull survived repeated cannon fire during the War of 1812. The cannon balls fired from the British war ships would bounce off the tough live oak hull.

  • Bark inclusions are pockets of bark found within the interior of a tree. An ingrown Limb is a limb or branch that has been cut through during the sawing process.

A knot is a portion of a branch or limb that has become incorporated in a piece of lumber.

  • Medullary rays are cellular structures found in the trunks of trees. In a cross section of a tree trunk, they are visible to the naked eye and appear as radiating lines from the center of the log, perpendicular to the growth rings.
